New Year, New You! Your smile is something worth celebrating

· Tips & Advice · No Comments

Our teeth are one of the first things people notice about us – we can help you take care of your oral health as well as finding ways to improve the appearance of your teeth to give you a smile that makes you beam with pride.

A healthy smile starts at home

cheeseEveryone should be brushing their teeth for two minutes every morning and every evening, this will help to keep cavities and gum disease away. The toothbrush head should be half on the tooth and half on the gum but make sure you don’t “scrub” too hard as this can damage the gums, remember gently does it!

Flossing twice a day is essential to prevent the build up of plaque and bacteria. Make sure you don’t just saw in and out, tension the floss at an angle to clean the inside of your teeth. Alternatively you can try interdental brushes like tepe. These are inserted between your teeth and remove 40% more debris than brushing alone – if you are unsure what’s best for you come and see our dental hygienist, Rebecca.

To safeguard against decay, dentists recommend cutting down on your sugar intake, eating no more than four teaspoons a day and avoiding acidic food and drink which erode the enamel of your teeth.

Give yourself a smile makeover

The quickest way to make a dramatic difference to your teeth is by whitening them. A bright white smile helps you look and feel year’s younger, boosting self-esteem. A fast, convenient and affordable way to brighten your smile.

One of the biggest advances in dentistry is the invisible brace. Crooked and overlapping teeth is a key reason for dental problems and it’s never too late to opt for braces in an effort to sort things out. Modern braces are less bulky and painful and are virtually invisible – we offer free consultations to discuss your needs. Call us on 0115 9733591

A generation of Britons haven’t had access to advanced dental technologies, or even good toothpastes and have suffered with advanced decay resulting in unhealthy mouths that are beyond the point of repair. You may think there is no hope but here at Sunshine Dental we have solutions such as hand crafted dentures or implants that will give you your smile back. Call us on 0115 9733591 or complete our online contact form.

Get ready to sparkle with gleaming white teeth that reflect the real you

· News, Tips & Advice · No Comments

Our lifestyle and the aging process can take its toll on our teeth

Our lifestyle and the aging process can take its toll on our teeth. Drinking tea, coffee, red wine and smoking can stain our teeth causing them to look dark and unattractive.

Tooth whitening is a fast, convenient and affordable way to brighten your smile.

Tooth whitening treatments are transformational, adding a sparkle to your smile that can leave you with greater confidence. One of the most important benefits of tooth whitening is that it improves your looks, boosts self esteem and a white bright smile helps you to look and feel years younger. Our tooth whitening treatment can get your smile looking its best by restoring your teeth back to their original colour very quickly without the need for cosmetic dentistry.

Is tooth whitening safe and suitable for everyone?

When performed by a registered dentist, tooth whitening is a quick, safe procedure however it is not suitable for everyone. If you have tooth decay or gum disease, these problems would need to be treated before tooth whitening commences. Our dentist will check first to see if it’s suitable for you and what options are best.

Is tooth whitening painful and are there any side effects?

Tooth whiting has been proven to be safe and effective however a very small percentage of people may feel some minor tooth sensitivity, particularly to very hot or very cold food and drink during treatment. Symptoms usually subside and disappear within a few days of stopping the treatment.

How much does tooth whitening cost?

Tooth whitening is a cosmetic treatment and therefore not available on the NHS. Our cost of £350 includes the taking of impressions to enable our skilled technician, Sian, to make your bespoke custom made trays. Your dentist will see you to fit the trays making sure they are perfect for you before supplying you with the professional tooth whitening gel and thorough instructions. A review appointment a week later is made to ensure you are happy with the procedure and to review the shade of white you want to achieve.

How long does tooth whitening last?

The length of time tooth whitening lasts depends on each individual and their life style choices and diet. It will usually last between 12-18 months but in other cases as long at 2-3 years. If you smoke or frequently eat and drink products that stain your teeth such as red wine, tea & coffee the effect is less likely to last as long. However once you have had trays made top up gels are available to purchase. These are especially effective if you have a special occasion coming up such as a wedding, holiday or job interview.

Are teeth whitening kits sold on the Internet safe to use?

Tooth whitening is only safe when carried out by a registered dental professional who has been fully trained. There are many offers on the internet, looking like a cheaper solution but you may be left with damaged gums and teeth, potentially risking your health. The only safe way of whitening your teeth is by first talking to a dentist.

Do whitening toothpastes work?

Whitening toothpastes don’t stay on the teeth long enough to make any major change, they are really for maintenance. Whitening toothpastes do not permanently alter the colour of the teeth; they simply contain polishing agents that remove deeper stains from the teeth. You should avoid using toothpastes with a gritty texture as these can erode tooth enamel, so avoid ones that contain salt, pumice, silica and mica.

If you would like an honest assessment on how to achieve a whiter, brighter smile contact us on 0115 9733591 or complete our online contact form to see how we can help.

Best Team – Sunshine Dental

Best Team

At Sunshine Dental we are a creative and focused team. The whole team participates actively and positively with patients taking the initiative to get things done.

Our team consists of nurses (one is dually qualified as a dental technician), receptionists, practice manager, dentist, clinical dental technician and hygienist; with an age range from 22 – 59. As well as the human team members we have registered pets as therapy (PAT) dog who is available to sit with nervous or phobic patients in reception.

It is the aim of the team to put patients first and at the heart of everything we do and work towards. From the first moment of contact we treat patients as individuals ensuring the patient ‘journey’ is managed carefully and with compassion. We spend time getting to know our patients building positive relationship which leads to knowledge about preferences and on occasion concerns. One patient recently commented that she doesn’t feel like she is in a dental practice but actually visiting friends.

All of our team talents were put to full use with Mrs S who called us very upset about her appearance. The patient works in London within the beauty industry where she feels appearance matters. Mrs S was both embarrassed and nervous. It took all of all of skills, working as a team, with genuine concern and care to take the patient through the process of gaining her confidence and creating her new smile.

I can totally recommend this wonderful dental practice. For anyone even slightly nervous it’s the place to go. No one likes going to the dentist but when anyone meets the friendly, professional staff it makes a difference to such an ordeal. Nerves calm immediately.

The standard of their work is the best and better than anyone can imagine. The atmosphere is great and the clinic is spotless but is welcoming. After a few bad experiences I am so happy and lucky to have met them all. I have a new look now that is so natural and comfortable.

Thank you all for your help and understanding. Will miss going to my appointments.

We regularly go above and beyond the normal duty of care, willingly working early or later, home delivering “forgotten” debit cards or personal belongings to elderly patients, making drinks for patients and their chaperones whilst waiting to be seen, remember patient’s “special” birthdays or anniversaries and come in at a weekend to mend a denture, in our on-site laboratory, for someone going on holiday; this is all.

As a practice we are involved locally with sponsoring a bursary at the Long Eaton Rugby Club, this assists children who may have financial difficulty in purchasing sports kit. Chris Brooks (Chairman and Development Manager) commented:

The bursary fund provided to the club has huge social and community benefit; it enables the most vulnerable junior players to continue and be involved in sport.

In conclusion we aspire to be a team who through effort, enterprise and hard work, will provide safe, high quality dental care. So why not come and see for yourself what excellent service you can receive from the best team!

It’s never too late to perfect your smile

· Tips & Advice · No Comments

Not everyone is born with a perfect smile and having crooked teeth can have a detrimental effect on your self confidence and self esteem – however does the word braces call to mind a teenager with a mouth full of metal? Thankfully that’s not the case anymore.

Quick Straight TeethThe four main factors that stop people getting orthodontic treatment are: Cost, appearance, time and discomfort. The Quick Straight Teeth™ invisible brace system uses either tooth coloured brackets and wires, or clear aligners to ensure once placed in the mouth they are almost invisible. People won’t even know you are wearing a brace.

Teeth can move with age and some adults find their previously straight teeth have become crooked or overcrowded. You may be experiencing jaw pain, or have difficulty in cleaning your teeth properly or you simply may have a smile that you find unattractive.

Getting braces fitted as an adult is becoming much more common and it is never too late to perfect your smile.

What will it cost?

Improving your smile goes beyond just the cosmetic, a good looking smile and a balanced bite is a worthwhile investment to ensure overall long term general and oral health. However here at Sunshine Dental we understand that cost is a very important consideration.

Quick Straight TeethOrthodontic treatment is dependent on individual cases which is why we offer a free initial consultation but if suitable, prices can start from as little as £1,500. We can offer 12 months 0% interest free finance to help you spread the cost subject to terms and conditions.

Quick Straight Teeth™ are one of the most cost effective adult brace systems on offer in the UK but don’t compromise on quality.

How long does it take?

Getting straighter teeth and a beautiful straight smile is quick compared to traditional orthodontic methods, however the length of time it takes is specific and tailored to each individual case. Generally you will see results within 4 – 24 weeks.

We will regularly review your progress to make sure you stay comfortable.

The braces and brackets we use have been designed to ensure optimum wearability and comfort for patients. Your clear braces will not only look discreet, but feel extremely comfortable on your teeth.

Quick Straight Teeth™ can restore your confidence, boost your self-esteem and get you smiling more so if you would like a beautiful new smile come and talk to us – 0115 9733591

National Smile Month May 16th – June 16th

· Health, Tips & Advice · No Comments

Sunshine Dental Practice are proud to support National Smile Month – the UK’s largest and longest running campaign to promote good oral health.

Sunshine Dental Smile Week

There are three key messages which go a long way in helping us develop and maintain a healthy mouth.

  • Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks
  • Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

The mouth is the window to the body and a healthy smile is a great asset, benefiting us socially by giving us confidence in our relationships and careers. As well as helping us to chew food our teeth help us talk and speak clearly and also give our face shape.

Maintaining a general level of good oral health is a fairly simple task yet many of us still chose to ignore the most basic day to day hygiene routines.
A staggering number of us brush for less than two minutes, as a nation we are over reliant on added sugars within our diet and millions of us haven’t seen a dentist in the last two years.

The consequences of this over a long period of time can lead to unnecessary, invasive, expensive treatment. The repercussions of poor oral health can go further than the mouth as new findings support dental problems can lead to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and dementia.

So if you are one of those millions who haven’t had a dental check up for a while why not come and talk to us – we are here to help.

We can offer direct access to our dental hygienist, Rebecca as well as offering a full range of dental treatments with our dentist Vishal Rana.

Tooth whitening is a fantastic, quick and inexpensive way to dramatically improve the appearance of your smile with minimal intervention

Sunshine Dental - WhiteningSmoking, drinking tea, coffee and alcohol as well as age can cause teeth to become discoloured or darken and although home application kits are available in stores, supervised tooth whitening by a dental care professional ensures complete safety and longer lasting results.

The advantages of tooth whitening are that it is a quick, safe, painless procedure that restores the natural colour of the teeth with no structural damage. The benefits of this are that your teeth will be lighter and brighter giving you a more attractive, confident smile. Products such as whitening toothpastes or strips will not produce the same glowing results.

The procedure is simple, safe and can be done from the comfort of your own home, normally only taking a couple of weeks to see a difference with the affects lasting between 2-3 years depending on lifestyle habits. Top up gels can be bought for future use.

Impressions are taken of your mouth so that custom made trays can be provided ensuring a perfect fit. The whitening gel will be dispensed by the dentist along with complete instructions. We will show you how to apply a small amount of gel into the tray and how to slide the trays over your teeth. You then wear the trays overnight or for short periods of time during the day. Dramatic results are normally seen within 2-3 weeks.

Sunshine Dental - Whitening

No whitening is permanent and maintenance will be required to keep that bright smile. We advise that you see a dentist first to check your teeth are healthy before you start treatment as teeth and gums can become permanently sensitive if they are not healthy first.

So if you would like a more youthful looking smile or have a special occasion or event coming up why not come and talk to us, prices start from £150 per arch.

Tips and advice for denture wearers

· Tips & Advice · Comments Off on Tips and advice for denture wearers

Read our tips and advice about dentures, where we have answered some of the most frequently asked questions from denture wearers.

What is a denture?

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth. It can be made from plastic (acrylic), injection moulded materials or metal.

Are dentures my only option?

No – fixed options such as implants & bridges are available

Should I see a dentist or a clinical dental technician to provide my dentures?

Gone are the days when only a dentist could provide patients with new dentures, you can now go directly to a Clinical Dental Technician. The benefits of this means you will be treated by someone who is focused purely on denture design and construction forming a unique partnership with excellent rapport, removing any issues that may arise due to miscommunication. A Clinical Dental Technician can work with you whilst you are in the chair with the advantage of the work being done within the same premises.

How long does it take to make a denture?

The construction of a denture can be complex and precise and will take a minimum of 5 visits. An initial impression is taken of your mouth so that a special tray can be constructed. This is unique to you. Following that your bite is recorded before we try-in your new dentures, once you are happy with the shape, colour and look we will then fit your new dentures.

How long will it take for me to get used to my dentures?

When you first have dentures fitted your mouth needs time to adjust and your jaw muscles and tongue need to learn to keep your dentures in place. Some people adapt very quickly to wearing dentures whilst other people take longer.

Will I be able to eat my favourite food?

Eating and pronouncing certain words will take a little practice. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces. Chew slowly using both sides of your mouth at the same time to prevent tipping. As you become more accustomed to your dentures introduce other foods until you return to your normal diet. However you should avoid eating sticky toffee and soft bread.

How long will dentures last?

Dentures will eventually need to be replaced but with proper care they can last several years. Dentures wear with regular use and your gums may change shape or shrink over the years. We recommend denture wearers have an annual check with either a clinical dental technician or dentist.

National No Smoking Day

Keep Calm & Quit Smoking

Sunshine Dental supports National No Smoking Day Wednesday 9th March 2016

We are all aware of the effects smoking has on our health causing many different medical problems such as lung cancer, bronchitis and emphysema however many people don’t realise the damage smoking causes within our mouths. It can lead to tooth staining, gum disease, tooth loss and in severe cases mouth cancer.

Gum (periodontal) disease is the biggest cause of tooth loss within adults. It is an infection of the gums which if left untreated affects the bone structure. Smoking weakens your body’s immune system making it harder to fight off infection and also hinders healing.

Warning signs and symptoms of gums disease:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Pain when chewing
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Receding gums or longer looking teeth

Smokers are four times more likely of developing gum disease and twice more likely to suffer tooth loss than non smokers. Smoking can also lead to vanity issues. Due to an increased and steady build up of plaque and tartar, the teeth of a smoker are less attractive and can cause bad breath. In some smokers the tongue can develop a yellowy, black, brown hairy appearance which is the result of a growth from using tobacco products.

How can gum disease be prevented?

  • Brush your teeth twice a day
  • Use floss or interdental brushes daily
  • Visit the dentist and hygienist regularly for examinations and professional cleaning

Whilst quitting smoking is the most effective way to ensure better oral health a good oral hygiene home care routine is vitally important. It is also very important given all of the risks and complications the affects smoking has on your oral health that smokers do not skip regular visits with a dentist.

When you attend our practice for a routine examination you will be thoroughly checked for developing signs of gum disease and oral cancer by checking your teeth, gums, tongue and throat. Our hygienist Rebecca can professionally clean your teeth getting rid of any staining and giving you the tools, techniques and advice on how to stay healthy.

If you would like further advice and help please contact us on 0115 9733591.
